What Does Clean Mean?
Clean beauty is a growing movement in the cosmetics and skincare industry that focuses on creating products free from harmful chemicals. This shift is driven by increasing awareness and concern about the potential health risks associated with many common ingredients in traditional beauty products.
- Safety First: Clean beauty products prioritize safety. This means avoiding ingredients that are known or suspected to be harmful to our health. Common culprits include parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances. These substances have been linked to various health issues, from skin irritation to more serious conditions like hormone disruption and cancer.
- Transparency: One of the cornerstones of the clean beauty movement is transparency. Brands committed to clean beauty provide clear, comprehensive ingredient lists so you know exactly what you’re putting on your skin. There are no hidden chemicals or vague terms, just straightforward information.
- Responsiveness to Health Concerns: The clean beauty movement emerged as a response to growing health concerns over widely used ingredients. As research and awareness have increased, so has the demand for safer, healthier alternatives.
Why We Think Clean Beauty Is Important
- Your Health: Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and what you put on it can be absorbed into your bloodstream. Using clean beauty products reduces exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, promoting overall well-being.
- Environmental Impact: Many harmful chemicals in traditional beauty products can also harm the environment. Clean beauty often goes hand-in-hand with eco-friendly practices, using sustainably sourced ingredients and environmentally friendly packaging.
- Ethical Choices: Clean beauty brands often adhere to higher ethical standards, including cruelty-free practices and fair labor conditions. This means your choices can also support humane and equitable practices in the beauty industry.

How Does Conscious Bunny Define “Clean”?
At Conscious Bunny, our philosophy towards “clean beauty” aligns closely with the principles outlined by Goop. For us, clean beauty means choosing products that are made without ingredients, such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances, that have been shown or even suspected to harm human health, animal health, or the environment.
How Do You Recognize Clean Brands?
Clean brands are transparent about their ingredients. They provide comprehensive and clear ingredient lists on their packaging and websites, avoiding vague terms like “fragrance,” which can mask harmful chemicals. A clean brand will openly list every ingredient used in their products, exclude harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances, and feature ingredients you can recognize and understand.
Certifications can be a reliable indicator of a brand’s commitment to clean beauty, however a brand can be clean without a certification. Look for labels such as EWG Verified, which indicates that the product meets the Environmental Working Group’s strict standards for health and transparency.
USDA Organic, which means the product contains organic ingredients free from synthetic chemicals; and Leaping Bunny (Cruelty-Free International) or PETA, ensuring that no animal testing is involved in the product’s development.USDA, Leaping Bunny or PETA certifications say nothing about the brand being fully clean though.
Clean beauty brands often go beyond safe ingredients to embrace ethical practices. They do not test their products on animals and avoid ingredients that harm animals. They use ingredients that are sustainably sourced, supporting fair trade practices and environmental sustainability. Additionally, they utilize recyclable, biodegradable, or minimal packaging to reduce their environmental impact.
A clean beauty brand is often vocal about its values and practices. They share information about their mission, sourcing practices, and manufacturing processes, engaging in honest marketing by avoiding misleading claims and being clear about what their products can and cannot do.
The Differences Between A Clean Product And A Cruelty-Free Product
Clean Beauty is also known as Non-Toxic Beauty, which means that the products do not contain certain ingredients that are bad for you and the environment or harsh for the skin.
Some examples of the ingredients that don’t make the cut in clean beauty products are sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, pesticides, petroleum derivatives, artificial coloring, and synthetic fragrances.
However, I need to warn about the terms “clean” and “non-toxic.” This is another term that is not regulated, and since it has become increasingly popular, many brands will just put ‘clean’ on their products to gain sales because of the increased clean beauty popularity.
You have to be careful! Thankfully, shops like Sephora and Cult Beauty have a special section (Sephora even has its stamp) for real clean/non-toxic products, which makes it easier for us to shop for clean products.
