What Does Vegan Mean?

When you see labels like “vegan”, “vegan-friendly”, or “100% vegan” on beauty products, it means that these products do not contain any ingredients derived from animals or any animal by-products. But what exactly does this entail?

  • Animal-Derived Ingredients: These are ingredients that come directly from animals. For example, carmine (also known as cochineal extract, C.I. 75470, E120, natural red, or crimson/carmine lake) is a red pigment derived from cochineal insects and is often used in lipsticks.
  • Animal By-Products: These are substances produced by animals but not directly harvested from them. Common examples include honey and beeswax (also known as Cera alba), which are produced by bees and frequently used in moisturizers and other skincare products. While bees are not killed for honey or beeswax, harvesting these by-products can disrupt their natural ecosystem.

  1. I actually had no clue that Haus Labs was Vegan! I’d add Bite Beauty to this list, too! They relaunched their whole line at the start of the year to have 100% Vegan formulas. For me Vegan formulas are always a nice-to-have, but not a must-have…. particularly with skincare. With my skin issue, honey really transforms my skin.

  2. Besides Milk Makeup (which I still NEED to try), I didn’t know that any of these brands were vegan! It’s nice to see more and more brands trying to make more ethical choices, but without compromising on awesome formulas. I’ve never heard of Tower 28, is it good?

  3. Yes great list! These are all brands that I need to try, or at least try more of for sure. I buy all kinds of makeup, even if its not cruelty free or vegan, but keeping clean brands in mind is growing in importance.
