Growing up, my mother used to lather me with this luscious, ever-fragrant body butter she made at home. I don’t remember much from my swing sets and make-believe days, but I’ll never forget the coconut and peppery scent that seemed to linger on my clothes all day.

Then I grew up, moved out, and lost my way in Walmart’s hallways, spending my hard-earned bucks on brands that promised the world but left my skin chapped and coarse. It wasn’t until recently, during a conversation with my mother, that memories of this magical, DIY, sustainable body butter came flooding back to me.

For the last eight months, my household has been obsessed with this DIY sustainable body butter, and today, I’m going to spill the beans for you. I will teach you how to make your own sustainable body butter based on my mother’s recipe!

This coconut and peppermint body butter comes together in minutes, is easy to store, and has virtually no expiry date. It is suitable for your whole body—yeah, legs, hands, torso, lips, elbows, anywhere you want to use it—and this luxurious concoction will leave your skin feeling nourished and refreshed all day long!

How To Make Sustainable Body Butter

Let’s dive into the fun part: making your own sustainable DIY body butter using my mother’s easy recipe and process. But before that, let’s go through the ingredient list. Here’s what you need to recreate this amazing body butter.

Everything You Need To Make DIY Eco-Friendly Body Butter

To whip up this magic at home, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup cocoa butter
  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil
  •  Electric Mixer
  • 1 teaspoon of peppermint essential oil (This is an optional step and provides fragrance. Skip this step if you’re sensitive or allergic to fragrance)

Now, let’s walk you through the whole process!

How To Make DIY Sustainable Body Butter

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to bring this body butter together:

Step 1: Prep the Coconut Oil & Cacao Butter

In a heat-safe bowl, melt the coconut oil and cacao butter using a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave until it’s completely liquefied.

Step 2: Add Peppermint Oil (Optional)

Once it reaches liquefaction, cool it at room temperature, add peppermint essential oil for fragrance, and stir well to combine.

Step 3: Refrigerate the Mixture

Allow the coconut oil (and peppermint oil, if added) to cool slightly until it starts to solidify around the edges but is still partially liquid in the center, and then refrigerate it for 20 minutes. We’re doing this to help the oil reach a semi-solid state that facilitates its whipping process.

Step 4: Whip the Body Butter

With the help of your handy electric mixer, whip the partially solidified coconut oil on high speed for 5-10 minutes or until it becomes light and fluffy. Look at the picture – this is the consistency you should be looking for. Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to make sure that the butter is being whipped evenly.

Step 5: Transfer to a Container

Once whipped to your desired consistency, transfer the body butter into a clean, airtight container. You can use a glass jar or a plastic tub. You can have separate containers for lip butter, body butter, elbow butter, etc.

Quality Ingredients For Lasting Benefits

When crafting your own body butter, the quality of the ingredients can make all the difference in terms of benefits to your skin. Similarly, when choosing additional skincare products to enhance your routine, selecting those committed to sustainability and quality is crucial.

For instance, a product like the Naked & Thriving Renew Serum embodies these principles, using ethically sourced, natural ingredients that complement your DIY body butter. This ensures your skincare routine is not only homemade but holistically mindful and effective.

How To Store Your DIY Sustainable Body Butter

Before you jump into your kitchen to try this, let’s talk about something equally important: storage. Yep, you must know how to keep your homemade concoction fresh and fabulous for as long as possible. Here’s how to keep that body butter in tip-top shape:

  1. Store in Cool, Dry Place: Store your body butter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause the butter to melt and lose its whipped consistency.
  1. Airtight Container: Transfer your whipped body butter into an airtight container to prevent exposure to air, which can cause the oils to oxidize and potentially go rancid more quickly.
  1. Use Dry Hands: Keep your body butter away from moisture to prevent contamination and the growth of mold or bacteria. Make sure your hands are clean and dry before dipping into the container.
  1. Use Clean Tools: When scooping out the body butter for use, always use clean and dry utensils to avoid introducing any contaminants into the jar.
  1. Check for spoilage: While your DIY body butter should last for several months when stored properly, it’s a good idea to periodically check for any signs of spoilage, such as changes in color, texture, or smell.

What’s So “Sustainable” About DIY Sustainable Body Butter?

What makes DIY sustainable body butter, well, sustainable? Let’s break it down.

First off, when you whip up your own batch at home, you have complete control over the ingredients you use. That means you can opt for ethically sourced, eco-friendly options, reducing your environmental footprint right from the get-go.

Secondly, by making it yourself, you cut out the need for excess packaging and transportation associated with store-bought products.

Lastly, don’t forget about the longevity factor – with proper storage; your DIY body butter can last for months, meaning less waste overall. So yeah, when it comes to sustainability, my mother’s DIY body butter is where it’s at!
