Since last year, brands can be sold in China without losing their cruelty-free status. Since 2021, most cosmetics sold in China no longer need pre-market animal testing. And since 2023, post-market testing doesn’t involve animals in determining safety anymore, either!
What’s the problem, you may think? Well, not every brand can qualify. Certain ingredients, products, and claims may still trigger animal tests during the registration process, and post-market testing involving animals, while rare, is still a possibility.
So, when Fenty Beauty launches in China on April 1st, does that mean the brand loses its cruelty-free status, or is Fenty still cruelty-free?
Fenty Beauty Launches In China Per April 1st: Is The Brand Still Cruelty-Free?
We do know that Fenty Beauty is currently 100% cruelty-free; they never test products or ingredients on animals, nor do they permit suppliers or retailers to conduct testing on their behalf. But does this change?
After seeing the news, I immediately contacted Fenty Beauty and asked if they could share all the details on the China launch and their cruelty-free status. I haven’t responded yet, but I will update this post as soon as I get a reply.
I assume that Fenty Beauty stays cruelty-free. It looks like the brand waited until it could safely enter the Chinese market without having to compromise on its values. It would be strange if they all of a sudden would agree with animal testing on their products.
Most brands can enter the Chinese market without having to test on animals; only products like sunscreen can trigger the animal testing requirement. Maybe Fenty Skin won’t launch in China (yet) due to this. For now, I don’t know, and it’s lots of speculation. But I wanted to ensure you guys know that I’m on it and very closely monitoring it!
Leaping Bunny created the Leaping Bunny China Qualification Program to assure shoppers that Leaping Bunny-certified companies that sell domestically in China are still cruelty-free. In case you have any questions, I recommend checking out their brand’s list here.
