We personally believe that since these brands operate independently from the parent company, you can support them as they’re cruelty-free. However, a small group of shoppers choose to boycott brands owned by a parent company that tests on animals.
We don’t mind which option you choose; we want to make it easy for all our readers. That’s why we decided to mention whether or not a parent company is involved.
Is TRESemmé Cruelty-Free Certified?
Yes, TRESemmé is certified by PETA.
Companies can be fully cruelty-free without being certified, but certifications are a good indicator of their ethical practices. The most trusted organizations that give out certifications are PETA and Leaping Bunny.
Is TRESemmé Sold Where Animal Testing Is Required By Law?
TRESemmé has confirmed that it is no longer selling in stores in China. The brand now sells its products online only in China; therefore, it is not required to test on animals.
In countries like China, certain cosmetic products may be subject to mandatory animal testing regulations. If a brand wants to sell its products in physical stores in China, it has to comply with these regulations, where animal testing may occur.
Starting in 2023, brands have the opportunity to enter the Chinese market without funding animal cruelty. However, not every brand may qualify. Certain ingredients, products, and claims may still trigger animal tests during the registration process, and post-market testing involving animals, while rare, is still a possibility.
To avoid animal testing in China, companies must meet specific criteria:
- Sell only ‘general’ cosmetics in China (such as makeup, skincare, haircare, nail polish, and perfumes).
- Avoid selling ‘special’ cosmetics like sunscreens or hair dye.
- Refrain from selling products for infants, children, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or products containing ‘New Cosmetic Ingredients.’
- Have a policy in place to recall products if post-market testing is required, rather than allowing them to be tested on animals.
Furthermore, products can avoid animal testing in China if they are manufactured in China or if their final assembly occurs in China. If manufactured outside of China, companies must obtain the proper safety certificates from their country of origin.
Brands that have been selling in China must ensure that all their products meet the exemption criteria while providing the proper safety certificates from specific authorities. This means that many brands currently sold in China may not yet be entirely cruelty-free.
It’s essential to note that while China is gradually relaxing its animal testing laws, it does not mean that all brands sold in China are now cruelty-free. While this phase may raise questions, brands selling in China no longer have to be an immediate no-no for cruelty-free shoppers.

Is TRESemmé Vegan?
TRESemmé is not vegan. Their products may contain animal-derived ingredients from normal sustainable animal husbandry, farming, or fishery practices, such as milk, honey, lanolin, silk, etc.
Products may also contain processed and denatured animal by-products with established uses, such as tallow, keratin, collagen, elastin, etc. TRESemmé says that, in most cases, this is because the ingredient performs a function for which no suitable alternative is available.

Is TRESemmé Clean?
TRESemmé is not clean. The brand says that TRESemmé products use only the highest-quality ingredients to create safe, science-backed, professional-quality formulas that give you salon-quality hair at home. However, the brand still uses parabens, phthalates, and sulfates.
TRESemmé offers sulfate-free and fragrance-free products, and as of 2022, their products are made without DMDM hydantoin, but this doesn’t make the whole brand clean in our eyes.
The term “clean beauty” is controversial because it isn’t regulated; this means that brands can label their products as ‘clean,’ ‘green,’ ‘organic,’ and ‘natural’ without strict guidelines.

TRESemmé is not fully gluten-free. Some TRESemmé shampoos, such as TRESemmé Botanique, are gluten-free, but the company says it can’t guarantee that all its products are completely allergen-free.
If any wheat, rye, barley, or oat-derived raw materials are in their products, they would be listed on the labels. This includes any hydrolyzed protein from wheat, rye, barley, or oats that may contain gluten.
Is TRESemmé Nut-Free?
TRESemmé is not fully nut-free. Since the brand is owned by Unilever, they follow their policies. Unilever follows the guidelines of the US Food & Drug Administration and uses the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients.
As shown on product labels, Unilever uses no peanut ingredients in its Personal Care products. However, some products do contain tree nut derivatives. Examples include almond, coconut, kukui, macadamia, pistachio, and shea nut variants in certain products. The highly refined nut oils and nut extracts used by Unilever do not contain allergenic proteins.
Is TRESemmé Soy-Free?
TRESemmé is not fully soy-free. There is no information on their site about soy in their products. However, I assume that their products may contain soy similar to the gluten and nut situations.

Where Is TRESemmé Made?
TRESemmé is an American brand of hair care products first manufactured in 1947 by the Godefroy Manufacturing Company in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. I don’t know if the brand is still manufactured in the US; there isn’t any information on this.
Is TRESemmé Sustainable?
TRESemmé is somewhat committed to sustainability. They are working towards making all of their products recyclable, and today, all of their non-black bottles are already recyclable. To make their black bottles recyclable, they are currently developing a new black pigment so they can be detected and sorted.
TRESemmé states on its site that by the end of 2020, most TRESemmé shampoo and conditioner bottles sold in the US will be made with 100% recycled plastic. TRESemmé already has 70-100% recycled content in most bottles.
The brand does not mention anything it does as a company to be more sustainable, though. There is no information about its carbon footprint or any projects on the company level.
